Area of Application:
This tool is provided to aid engineers, planners, and installation companies working with slope stabilization issues. It assists in the selection of an appropriate pin drapery system based on two different design approaches, “soil” and “rock,” as described in Krist, Raithel, and Weingart (2015) or Rüegger & Flum (2000). Both approaches involve flexible facing systems for slope stabilization and rock protection made from steel wire mesh/netting. The mesh is secured in place by soil nails, with spike plates supporting the force transmission between the mesh and nails. The tool only provides the proofs to retain the instable surface layer, as global stability is not considered.
Relevant guidelines and standards:
The approach is primarily used for slope stabilization systems assessed according to the European Assessment Document EAD 230025-00-0106. In this method, a layer of loose soil material or significantly loosened rock is stabilized on the slope surface using soil mechanical techniques. The effects on the system, considering the assumed thickness of this layer and the geometric and geotechnical boundary conditions, are determined for rigid body fracture mechanisms and compared with the system resistances. Additional actions such as seismic loading or subsurface flow concepts are taken from Eurocodes 7 and 8.
In summary, this tool uses calculation methods and parameters that are known from the literature references and from the technical evaluations of the products used.

Anwendungsbereich:

Linee guida e standard pertinenti:

Rüegger & Flum (2000): Slope Stabilization with High-Performance Steel Wire Meshes in Combination with Nails and Anchors, Symposium on Slope Stability, November 17, 2000, Seoul Korea, pages 3-38
Step 1: Input data
All units of measurement in this tool are Imperial.
Nail distance: The nailing pattern foresees a shift of the nails in every second row/column instead of a regular grid. This nailing arrangement reduces the width of long downslope channels.
Layer thickness: This is the thickness of the unstable layer. If the layer thickness varies through the slope, separate calculations/proofs have to be carried out.
Upper width of anchor plate’s pressure cone: This value is set automatically based on the slope stabilization system chosen in Step 2.
Step 2: System properties
System: The list of available systems containing combinations of mesh and anchor plates by Trumer Schutzsbauten that successfully complete all tests prescribed by the European guideline EAD 230025-00-0106. The testing results for the characteristic system values ZR, DR, PR, Ms,k and the spike plate diameter d are automatically set according to the selected system.
Nail type: This list contains a variety of soil nails available on the market. If a nail is needed that is not part of the list, a similar one can be chosen that has values for TR and SR that are slightly smaller than the desired ones.
Step 3: Special load cases
In principle, the slope investigated is in a certain way stable on its own. Otherwise, it would be impossible to install the facing. However, this stability has on the one hand a safety factor in the worst case of only 1.0 and on the other hand, other load cases that may happen in future are not covered. The latter can be defined in this step.
Load increase due to earthquake: The values to be entered regarding an addition horizontal and vertical load correspond to accelerations in these directions acting on the soil material. These accelerations multiplied with the soil mass define the additional loads. The recommended values 0.175 and 0.0825 are defined in Eurocode 8. If earthquakes are not to be considered set both values to 0.0.
Slope parallel flow: If the soil is submerged by water, this load case assumes that the water follows due to gravity and can be selected. Considering slope parallel flow imposes an additional slope parallel force in Steps 5 & 6 and reduces the self-weight of the soil due to buoyancy.
Step 4: Partial safety factors
Eurocode 7 (Geotechnics) foresees in Table 12 partial safety factors of 1.0 for all soil properties including the density and in Table 11 a factor of 1.35 on the loading side. Here, the soil material is the actual load acting on the slope stabilization system and the soil density receives a safety factor greater than 1.0:
• Safety factor friction angle = 1.0
• Safety factor cohesion = 1.0
• Safety factor density = 1.35
Resistance safety factors acc. Eurocode 7 (Geotechnics) – Table 13
• 1.40 for CC1 & CC2
• 1.6 for CC3
• with CC = Consequence Class
Model uncertainty
• safety factor 1.1
Remark: An alternative way – often observed in practice – is to switch the partial safety factors of friction angle and density to
• Safety factor friction angle = 1.35
• Safety factor density = 1.0
Step 5: Local instabilities between single nails
Proof 1: The force Z prevents the mesh from sliding down the slope. However, there is no knowledge on the magnitude of Z regarding the proposed dimensioning model. As such, this force is assumed to be a value that doesn’t exceed the corresponding maximum resistance of a spike plate ZR reduced by the resistance safety factor gammaR. This maximum value is proposed next to the input field.
Proof 2: This proof is more or less the ‘heart’ of the design approach. If soil material begins to detach, it presses on the mesh. All pressures within a certain slope area (maximum surrounded by 4 nails) concentrate at the lowest nail. The proof checks whether the expected loads Pd are smaller than the punching resistance PR at the upper edge of a spike plate. The latter value is obtained from the assessment according to the European guideline EAD 230025-00-0106.
The algorithm determines the maximum value for Pd depending on the geometry of the sliding soil. For this purpose, calculations for different values t and beta are performed in the background and the combination delivering Pd,max is then used.
Alternative proof 1/2: The force Z (assumed for proof 1) reduces above punching load Pd. That is, the higher Z is assumed, the lower Pd becomes. On the contrary, this means If Z is assumed to zero, Pd becomes Pd = maximum. If this maximum Pd is still smaller than the corresponding resistance Pr, an assumption of Z is not necessary anymore. In this case, the calculated force Z is equal to zero. Only, if Pd needs the support of Z to be smaller than PR, Z obtains a specified value. In this case the proof for Pd is on 100% and Z has to stay below ZR.
Step 6: Slope-parallel, superficial instabilities
In this step, a pre-tensioning force V in the nail has to be assumed. This force is generated by screwing the spike plate tightly. However, there is no prescription on how strongly the nuts on the nails have to be tightened. Further, in many cases this pre-tension fades away over time in the field. The maximum bending resistance of the spike plate defines an upper limit for V. This is given next to the corresponding input field and is calculated based on a mechanical model given in the right-hand figure.
Proof 6: After this proof, an expected skin friction between nail and stable ground per running meter can be chosen to obtain a minimum bore hole length in the stable ground. This considers the superficial stabilization only. To proof the global slope stability further calculation, nail dimension and lengthening are necessary.
